The Trossachs ['Na Trosaichean' in Scottish Gaelic] is a small woodland glen in the Stirlingshire area of Scotland. The area lies between Ben Venue to the south and Ben A'an to the north, has Loch Katrine to the west and Loch Achray its east. Though, the name is generally used to refer to the broader area of wooded glens, braes, burns and tranquil lochs in the area east of Ben Lomond.
The scenic attraction of the Trossachs became very popular after Sir Walter Scott wrote his romantic portrayal of Scotland's history, in ballads and poems. Scott's poem 'Lady of the Lake' written in 1810 listed many of the Trossachs place names which helped bring each one of them become more popular.
This was followed up by his 1817 historical novel 'Rob Roy' which romanticised the outlaw cattle thief Raibert Ruadh who was born at Loch Katrine, and was buried at Balquhidder. The only lake in Scotland, the Lake of Menteith, is located only 6 miles to the south east of the glen, right on the boundary of the Trossachs region.
